#Stems ~ Do The Right Thing

Ever watched the 1980’s Spike Lee movie, “Do The Right Thing”? Such a catchy title, and for those who have seen the movie, specific scenes and scripted lines will forever be ingrained in our minds– Oftentimes, bringing on a reflective smile or an unsettling memory– of the comedy or the drama, respectively. What we may not have realized then, is that it wasn’t just a new age, eclectic form of theatrical entertainment, the movie’s title had symmetry to a lifestyle.

Have you ever had a moment when you had no doubt at all, that doing the right thing was the reason that you reaped some pretty cool benefits and an abundance of blessings after the fact? What about a moment when it is affirmed that you made the right decision, even when it meant not taking the path of least resistance?  A moment when the fight was certainly worth the reward?  A moment when others are blessed because of this selfless decision to “Do The Right Thing”….?

It starts with a simple belief in doing what’s right. It starts with a foundation cemented in Faith. It starts with putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. It starts with fighting against foolishness and fighting for fair.  It’s about advocating for folk who can’t, who won’t or who don’t even realize that they need to advocate for themselves. It starts and ends with believing that no matter what, if I do the right thing, regardless of the outcome, God will be pleased!

Although I’ve made quite a few completely “in the moment” decisions to take a trip on that infamous road called, Wrong Thing Avenue, as I continue to mature in my faith, by seeking God and studying His word, that road has detours! As I travel along this journey, I’m focusing more on rerouting my thoughts and my actions to a higher road. Sometimes, the alternate route has some rugged terrain, and I just might miss a few exits due to overthinking, second-guessing and confusing God’s will with my own, however arriving at the right destination, the right location, at the right time has perks…. My heart is happy. My mind is mellowed. My soul feels safe. My decision has depth. My peace has renewed purpose…All because I really do want and try harder every day to “Do The Right Thing!” And better yet, I know Who gets the glory when I choose to do so!

“It’s the action, not the fruit of the action, that’s important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there’ll be any fruit. But that doesn’t mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Peace & Blessings,
